چکیده

Isothiazolinones are used as biocides in a wide variety of products, such as cosmetics, detergents, and industrial products. In the 1980s, a formulation with methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylisothiazolinone (MI) was responsible for an allergic contact dermatitis ‘epidemic’. To control this phenomenon, a maximum allowed dose was set. However in 2005, MI alone was introduced in cosmetics, and this was followed by a new ‘epidemic’ of sensitization to MI and MCI/MI (1). We performed a retrospective study, consulting the medical files of patch tested patients reactive to ISs, from 2005 to 2013. MCI/MI was tested at 100 ppm in water (TROLAB® patch test allergens, Almirall Hermal

Methylisothiazolinone in selected consumer products in Belgium: Adding fuel to the fire?

BACKGROUND Methylisothiazolinone (MI) contact allergy is severely affecting consumers with allergic contact dermatitis, owing to its presence in cosmetics, household detergents, and water-based paints, in particular. Data on the true isothiazolinone concentrations in these products are scarce, and labelling may be incorrect. OBJECTIVES To report on the MI concentrations in such products marke...

Occupational induction of hypersensitivity after an accidental exposure to chloromethylisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (CMI/MI) in an industrial worker.

A process worker in a paper chemical plant developed an immediate local dermal irritation and delayed bullous dermatitis due to induction of hypersensitivity following an accidental exposure to chloromethylisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (CMI/MI) biocide. Contact allergy to the isothiazolinone mixture was confirmed by skin patch testing. The dermatitis healed in four weeks, and the wo...

Lichenoid contact dermatitis secondary to methylisothiazolinone (MI)

MCI: methylchloroisothiazolinone MI: methylisothiazolinone INTRODUCTION Methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MI/MCI) are broad-spectrum preservatives widely used in cosmetics and household and industrial products. It is well known that MI/MCI can cause allergic contact dermatitis with a spongiotic reaction pattern. Because of this reaction, restrictions have been placed on the...

Co-existing sensitivity to metronidazole and isothiazolinone.

A 68-year-old woman developed allergic contact dermatitis to topical metronidazole gel as proven by positive patch tests to the gel and to metronidazole. She was also allergic to methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (MC/MI). The similarity between the two molecules and the fact that the patient reacted to the gel after the very short incubation period of 1 day (i.e. not long en...
